Evaluation

Overall i believe that my experimental video is good. I worked very well and i finished my work before the deadline was over. In my experimental video the storyline is simple but brilliant, it is about 2 people who settled there differences without using physical violence. One of the actors is coming up the stairs and he accidentally bumps into someone at the top of the stairs, he says sorry but the other one is very hot headed and starts to use some harsh words. One of the actors pushes him and runs down the stairs, the other actor chases him and pushes him against the wall. They talk about what has just happened and by talking they settle there differences.

The video that has been produced is an experimental video but the difference with mine is that you can tell what the meaning is by just watching the video. However i have edited my movie and it is now in slow motion, fast motion and real time. The reason i have done this is because the emotions we feel towards the video change because we see things in a more serious view when the video is in slow motion but when we speed it up it is seen in a comical way.

When i started out the plan for my video the idea was a little different but i decided to change the video because i would not need to take risks or rely on other people to play a part in my movie. But it did not change a lot because personally i believed the idea was perfect. The people who viewed my video knew what it was about by just watching the video but when it changed from real time to slow motion there mood also changed and they felt differently about the video.

I believe that my video had many strengths to it. For instance i believe that if people watch my video they would feel differently about about violence and they would think before they act. Also i believe that people would talk about there differences before it turns into violence. If i had another chance to make my video the changes i would make would probably to add a soundtrack. Also i would probably added captions in between the scenes. But overall i think the idea was brilliant and my experimental video can changes people's views on violence and hopefully we can settle our differences by talking.

Exhibition Plan

My experimental video will be shown on the college stairs. in my video the scene is set on the stairs at county mall, so i fought it would be a good idea to replicate the scene by showing it on the college stairs. i fought that by showing it on the stairs it would create the same sort of atmosphere and it will be more intense to the viewers.

everything turns by matt hattler

everything turns is a good video because it tells us about time , life and death which are three important things in life. the concept is not very modern, it is pretty basic but like i said the installtion piece is very effective because it tells us about important things in life. i think that the craft is stop motion even though the video was very short. but i beleive that this is clever becasue the creator puts his point across that time is runnig out. the film shows us about the harsh realties in real life and we can see this in the video. in one scene we can see a man turn to dust and when his dust is gone a tombstone appears.

MUTO - a wall painted animation by BLU

i personally think that MUTO is a brilliant animation and the concept and craft in this video is high. MUTO is wall painted animation by BLU and it is in stop frame animation, it is made up of 25 frames a second of wall painted art. in the end it is all put together in photographs to create an animation. the makers of this film had to work very hard because the craft is very high and it looks like it is done without a high budget production. i believe that the concept behind this video is rebirth and you can see this throughout all the scenes. a brilliant exaple of this is when insects come out of the creatures mouth and then they eat the creature. this shows the audience that after producing these insects the creature dies but the insects are now born. this is scene throughout all the scenes in different methods.

telling lies by simon ellis

telling lies is a brilliant experimental video, although it does not have a great craft behind it the concept is brilliant. the film shows a black screen throughout the whole video while picking out a couple of phone conversation about a drunken night out. the film is brilliant because rather than telling us what the characters where saying they where telling us what they where actually thinking. i think this video has is superb becasue it shows that people are'nt always truthful and a brilliant exaple of this is when the main characters mum call her son and she askes him what wrong he tells her that his girlfrind and him have just split up however on the screen he is thinking it is none of her business. this continues throughout the whole film and it shows that people dont actually speak about what really on thier mind. the concept to this film is brillaint because we can relate to it and because the craft is low rather than us thinking of the video we read the words on the screen instead.

Gisele Kerozene by jan kounen

Gisele kerozene is a short experimental film which is most likely a comic video. it does not have an obvious concept however it has a lot of craft and skill which makes it a good video. the video is based a a modern day city with 3 characters, each of these characters resemble witches are on the hunt for this small bird statue which is stolen by a fourth person. the 3 characters chase him on there brooms that have been modified. as they give chase through the streets the character who has stole the statue tries to kill off or escape the witches who are chasing him by zooming in and out of the city. the scenes have a brillaint technique as they are using stop frame animation which makes it look more comical. the audience do not get the concpet however it makes up for it with the craft and comedy. i think that this video shows that even though there is not a great concept behind this video it is still a good experimental film. i think that the concept is a little hard to get but it may have been that some poeple are greedy and they will do anything to have what they want. the sounds in the film where brillaint because it brought out the comcial side to the video.

chapter 3 narrative and non-narrative structures

a narrative structure is not always important but it also depends in which context the film is viewed. For example in a cinema, people are expected to sit throughout the whole film a narrative structure is important, so the audience can see that there is a clear beginning and end. this helps in a big way because the viewers can tell what the film is about and they can relate to the characters. non- narrative film structures are very useful in a place such as gallery or some public spaces. this is so people can walk into the film at whatever point and still be able to understand the concept and the story. for example in the Tate museum there was a film with no narrative structure called material gestures by Paul McCarthy and the film kept repeating itself on a television and it was played constantly. films with a narrative structure tend to emphasise the concept. both of these structures are really important.

chapter 2 - the use of technology and techniques and styles

Over the years technology and filming techniques have drastically changed. art is something that does not need a lot of craft to become a famous painting. art is not the only thing that has changed throughout the years, films have also had a major change due to the advancement in technology. experimental videos have had a big part to play in this because of their different craft and concept, for example girl chewing gum was a experimentla film which was very fascinating and still is now. It shows people walking in front of the camera and a man shouting out directions to make it seem like he is telling the people what to do however his voice was recorded a while later and then it was attached to the film.i think that the concept of this piece is that people are made to believe things on the television that aren't necessarily real. technology has changed throughout the the world especailly in films and art becasue now there are a variety of films such as aniamtion and stop frame animation. stop frame animation was used in Gisele Kerozene by Jan Kounen the film did not have a great concept behind it but the craft was brillaint and it made the film stand out.

1 - discuss both past and current artists and works

i have recently viewed three different pieces of art from different artist's. one of the pieces is called koyaanisqatsi which is made by Godfrey Reggio. another piece of art is called "girl chewing gum" which is made by john smith, and the third video is called "material gestures" which is made by Paul McCarthy.

the main point that links koyaanisqati and girl chewing gum is that they have non diagetic sound with the narrative. in both the videos there is no sound but in koyaanisqatsi there is background music. girl chewing gum was made in 1976, technology at that time was very good but nowadays it is and old form of technology. koyaanisqatsi was made by Godfrey Reggio in 1983. koyaanisqatsi has a variety of shots which range from long shots of the grand canyon to close up shots of buildings or streets in America. the concept of this video is very weird but interesting for example the video contains scenes that have explosions going on but the background music is very peaceful. koyaainisqtsi is very different from girl chewing gum because there are many different visual images. girl chewing gum is in black and white and that shows us how old the video is.

material gestures has diagetic sound but i don't think anyone speaks in the video however you can hear objects moving in the background and you can hear him moaning and groaning. material gestures has a lot of explicit material and i am surprised that art gallery's don't mind having that sort of material in there gallery's.

i think that koyaanisqatsi and girl chewing gum are similar in some ways but they also have many differences. material gestures is in no way whatsoever similar. however there are some similarities, for example it was made the same sort of time as girl chewing gum.

6. audience, and audience interpretation of the work

many audiences react differently to pieces of art that they see and it is interesting to see their reactions. each person chooses to view a piece of art differently and looks at it in a different perspective. some people may not be interested in the art itself but may be interested in the artist. some people reactions may be negative others might be positive. some people are afraid to show their expressions but i think this is wrong because this shows you are not interested in the art or in the meaning. also because they are not showing their feelings they are going to take other people's idea's and views. personally i think it is good that people show their true feelings because we can learn a lot from their ideas. some people tend to listen to other people's ideas and views and an example of this is Paul McCarthy's installation video called "material gestures", i viewed this piece of art at the Tate modern and found it a bit amusing. however some people in the room where horrified to what they where seeing and others where intrigued. i was with a group of friends when i entered the room and as i looked at the screen i found it a bit repulsive however as soon as i looked at my friends they where giggling at the video so my views had changed because i started to laugh at the video as well. my ideas and feeling towards the piece of art had changed because i did not follow my true feeling but i followed someone Else's opinions. i personally believe that a artist makes a piece of art with one meaning but his idea has created many other meanings but he has done this unintentionally.

chapter 5

at the start of the assignment i had many different ideas about how my experimental video would be. now that i have seen some examples of experimental video's my ideas are now limited and my ideas are now a work in progress. some of the video's i watched did inspire me and i gathered lots of vital information from them. koyaanisqatsi is a brilliant experimental video and gave me some ideas for my own video. one of the ideas i gathered from koyaanisqatsi is that my video does not need to include any actors or actresses and i can just use the outside world for my video. another idea that i got from koyaansiqatsi is one of the shots that they do is sped up in post production and i could do this for my experimental video. "girl chewing gum" was also another brilliant experimental video which had many brilliant concepts. "girl chewing gum" looked like it was pre- filmed and this could be used in my video.

koyaanisqatsi (life out of balance)

koyaanisqatsi is a unique film created by Godfrey Reggio and it's duration time is 1hour and 23Min's. the film is unique in many different ways, first of all the visual images chosen in this piece are different from most films. it is different first of all because it is fast motion and switches to slow motion, also at the start the opening images are of cave men drawings. also at the start the music is a regional chant and is weird but also relaxing. the music doesn't have to much too it but it seems that it is always building up to something. i think that the concept to this video is very weird and unique because we have violent images with calm music and the modern era against the old. i think that the concept has something to do with how we have changed or evolved in the wrong way and it is a problem throughout the world. after watching the film I'm am still left with an intriguing question, what was the film all about? i am still not quite sure but i know that koyaanisqatsi means life out of balance and godfrey reggion might be showing us how look at the world from a different perspective.

4. the use of exhibition space to create meaning

A piece of art is beautiful in many ways but where the piece of art is being shown also plays a key factor to what you feel about it. for example if a peaceful picture of a field full of daffodils was shown in an art gallery it would make you feel peaceful and relaxed, however if i moved that picture into a busy town centre it would change your feelings about the picture and you would not fully appreciate it. people in town centre's would not pay attention to the beautiful piece of art because they would not expect to find art their. however in a art gallery it is a sort of ritual to look at beautiful pieces of art and appreciate the beauty behind them.

the atmosphere of a room can really change the way you feel about a piece of art. when i visited the Tate i saw some brilliant pieces of art but i also sense that it was the atmosphere of the room that made me feel this way, for example there is a piece of art at the Tate which is very unique. it is a very large mahogany dinner table which is in a a big brightly lit room. It has four humongous chairs and a large table in the middle of the room.

girl chewing gum

"girl chewing gum" by john smith (1976)

Girl chewing gum is a short video clip of a normal day to day life in 1976. the clip took place of a normal busy street and john smith is filming the scene and is the director/narrator.

john smith mentions a scene when a man is walking down the street with his hands in his pocket and john smith says he has just robbed a bank, we do not know if it is true or false because we don't know if this is in the right concept. we are made to believe that what john is saying is true but it might not be.

this clip was pre-filmed so this means that john wasn't actually at the scene at that moment. john could have been in a field adding his voice to the scene.
